50 million Americans, including 16 million children, suffer from food insecurity. At the same time, 40% of all food in the United States goes to waste. Restaurants, caterers, and grocery stores contribute a significant amount to this total. In 2008, food service businesses and retailers wasted a combined total of 129 billion pounds of food.

Despite the great efforts of thousands of food recovery organizations across the United States, food waste and hunger continue to be serious problems in our communities. This is why we have created FlashFood, a mobile application to help food service businesses, food recovery organizations, local community centers, and volunteers to work together to recover perishable food and connect it with those in need.
